Model Number Seventeen Reverb
TOPOLOGY
This is a 6L6 variant of the classic Princeton Reverb amp with heavy duty transformers and a 12″ speaker. It features tube driven spring reverb, a “bias wiggle” tremolo, a cathodyne phase inverter, two fixed-bias 6L6 power tubes, and a single 12″ speaker driven at about 18 watts.
DESCRIPTION
The 6L6 version of the model Number Two amp is modified to extract all the power and glory from its pair of 6L6 power tubes. I add beefed up transformers from Mercury Magnetics, and a 12″ speaker to move the Princeton into a different class. This is a small but mighty amp that produces a full 18 watts of clean power. The build features Sozo blue molded capacitors, a mixture of carbon film and metal film resistors, cloth covered wire, plus an improved layout and modern construction techniques. I also incorporate an improved and fully adjustable bias supply to allow you to perfectly dial in the bias when it comes time to change the power tubes.
The cabinet I use is solid pine and slightly oversized… about 1″ taller than normal. This extra cabinet volume adds a touch of fullness and lets the 12″ speaker breath. Both ceramic and alnico speakers work beautifully in this amp.
