AB763 Twin Reverb
TOPOLOGY
Two channels with Treble / Middle / Bass tone stack. The Vibrato channel includes a bright cap. The signal splits to a parallel effects loop containing a tube driven spring reverb unit. Wet and dry signals are mixed together at a 12AX7 recovery stage before going to a long tail pair phase inverter which feeds four fixed-bias 6L6 power tubes driving a massive output transformer. Solid state rectifier and a photo-resistor based volume modulating tremolo. Two 12″ speakers at about 85 watts.
DESCRIPTION
It’s good to be King. The Twin Reverb is the most powerful, most loved (and sometimes most hated) amp of the blackface era. It produces the classic blackface clean tone. No other amp can match it. And it does it at volumes that will never leave the pro musician wanting for more. Nevertheless, the stupendous size and weight of the Twin does leave many guitar players grumbling about their backs. But if you can handle it (or pay someone else to handle it for you) there is no better choice for the pro musician. Based on the classic AB763 circuit, it provides a gorgeous, musical clean tone at stunning volumes. In addition, it’s an outstanding pedal platform and a standout performer in the recording studio. Even at moderate volumes, the clean sounds are ravishing.
My version is pure vintage in every detail, and adds a few refinements to lower the noise floor.
